Philippines and Key West Approve Tentative 2027 Budgets

Two distinct government bodies approved tentative 2027 budgets on September 14 and 15. In the Philippines, the House Committee on Appropriations approved a P7.2-trillion national budget. The proposal includes potential funding increases for agriculture and education to address the impacts of a Super El Niño.

While the committee approved the bill without amendments, Marcelino C. Libanan, the minority floor leader, objected to the move. He argued that the minority must maintain its role in scrutinizing allocations and debating the budget before it moves to plenary deliberations.

Separately, the City Commission of Key West in Florida unanimously passed a $331.4 million budget for Fiscal Year 2027. The budget maintains a 0% tax rate increase above the rollback rate and restores $125,000 in funding for youth sports leagues.

During the proceedings, City Manager Brian L. Barroso addressed the cost of a new fire station, establishing a $25 million threshold for the project. Barroso defended the current budget figures, stating that providing further cost reductions within a few weeks was not realistic.
