Google Acquires Project Maize Site for $832 Million Data Center

Google is developing an $832 million data center in Michigan City, Indiana, at the former Federal Mogul Corp. facility.

Google confirmed on April 16, 2026, the acquisition of the Project Maize site in Michigan City, Indiana, to develop a data center. The project, estimated at $832 million, will be located at 402 Royal Road, the site of a former Federal Mogul Corp. facility that has remained vacant for over 15 years and was owned by Phoenix Property Investors since 2022.

Broderick Green, Google's Data Center Public Affairs Manager, stated the company will pay 100% of the power and infrastructure costs driven by its operations. Green emphasized a commitment to protecting and restoring the environment and using industry-leading practices to ensure the company's presence is a positive one for the local area.

Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch welcomed the project, noting that welcoming the company spotlights the city as a hub for digital infrastructure. While city officials expect the development to drive job and tax growth, the project has previously faced protests from construction workers concerning the use of out-of-state labor.
