India Launches Seafarer-First Response After Iranian Missile Attacks

The Government of India implemented a new security framework for sailors after Iranian missile strikes killed and injured Indian crew members in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian forces launched a series of missile strikes on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and off the coast of Oman between July 14 and 15, 2026. The attacks targeted several vessels, including the Emirati supertankers MT Mombasa and MT Al Bahiyah, and the container vessel GFS Galaxy. These strikes resulted in the death of Indian sailor Rohan Kumar, the disappearance of engineer Herambh Karmarkar, and injuries to at least 10 other Indian nationals.

In response, Sarbananda Sonowal, India's Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, launched the "Seafarer-First" initiative. This whole-of-government approach includes a real-time operational dashboard managed by the Directorate General of Shipping to track all Indian seafarers in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman. The government now mandates fresh threat assessments for all vessel movements in these regions and has established 24/7 grievance support for affected families.

Diplomatically, the Government of India summoned Iran's deputy ambassador and filed formal objections with the International Maritime Organization, citing violations of international maritime law. Simultaneously, the United States Central Command attributed the attacks to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and responded by bombing military bases in southern Iran and reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports. The escalation caused shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz to largely halt and drove Brent crude prices to $87.49 a barrel.
