India Boosts Domestic Oil Production Amid Global Route Disruptions

Hardeep Singh Puri attributes high crude oil prices to supply route chokepoints and announces initiatives to increase India's domestic energy production.

India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, stated that high crude oil prices result from supply route disruptions rather than a global shortage. Speaking at the 20th Foundation Day of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, Puri noted that global supply of 104 million barrels per day exceeds the 94 million barrels consumed.

Puri identified the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the closure of the Red Sea route, and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz as the primary drivers of price increases and high freight charges. He highlighted that 40% of global energy moves through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a critical chokepoint.

To reduce reliance on volatile international markets, the Government of India is increasing domestic oil and gas production through the Samudra Manthan initiative. Puri claimed the initiative is already producing initial results to mitigate exposure to these global risks.
