AI Bulk Buying Triggers Nvidia RTX 5090 Shortages

AI companies are purchasing Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards in bulk for data center use, triggering severe inventory shortages and extreme price inflation for consumer gamers. The trend is driven by the card's 32GB of GDDR7 memory, which makes it a cost-effective alternative to professional AI workstation GPUs like the RTX 6000 Pro, which retails for $16,000.

First-party inventory has almost completely disappeared from major U.S. online retailers, including Amazon, Newegg, and Best Buy. While the original January 2025 MSRP was $1,999, third-party marketplace sellers are now listing the GPU for between $6,395 and $9,500. Reports from HKEPC indicate that GPUs are being shipped in pallets for AI deployment, further straining availability. Demand has also extended to the RTX 5080, leaving only lower-tier cards like the RTX 5070 Ti as viable options for PC players.

Unlike previous efforts to deter cryptocurrency miners with Lite Hash Rate versions, there is currently no technical disincentive to prevent the use of these consumer cards for AI computing. While online stock is depleted, Micro Center continues to sell the cards in-person at prices closer to the average selling price.
