Humza Yousaf Releases Book on Family's Gaza Ordeal
Humza Yousaf published a book detailing his in-laws' struggle to escape Gaza and criticizing the British government's failure to assist them.
Former First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf has released a book titled "Under Fire," which chronicles the month-long ordeal of his mother-in-law, Elizabeth, and father-in-law, Maged. The couple became stranded in Gaza during the 2023 Israeli bombing campaign, struggling to find food and safety in Deir al-Balah.
Yousaf describes how his in-laws made repeated, failed attempts to exit through the Rafah border crossing, despite pledges from the Israeli government to allow foreign nationals to leave. The narrative highlights the personal strain Yousaf faced while balancing his leadership role in Scotland with urgent pleas to the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for evacuation assistance.
In the book, Yousaf criticizes former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly for a lack of communication and former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for failing to provide updates for British citizens who had family members trapped in Gaza.
