Citadel Expands Quant Operation to Recruit AI Researchers

Citadel is increasing its quantitative investing headcount at a double-digit rate and recruiting AI researchers from labs like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.

The hedge fund Citadel LLC is expanding its quantitative investing operation by increasing headcount at a double-digit rate over the next year. The firm is widening its recruitment search to include artificial intelligence labs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, competing directly with Silicon Valley for researchers who can use AI tools to generate profitable investment ideas.

Navneet Arora, head of global quantitative strategies, stated that while AI automates data collection and analysis, it increases the value of researchers who can act as "managers of machines." To support this growth, the firm launched a new systematic trading team for global equities led by Alexey Poyarkov. Citadel currently manages approximately $76 billion and allocates multi-billion dollar sums to its quant strategies.

To protect its proprietary strategies and talent, the firm requires non-compete agreements of up to two years for investing staff. Additionally, Citadel has introduced a program to purchase trading insights from other hedge funds.
