FEC Questions Excessive Donations to Eric Schmitt Campaign
The Federal Election Commission is investigating thousands of donations to Senator Eric Schmitt's campaign that appear to exceed federal contribution limits.
The Federal Election Commission sent three letters this year to the campaign committee of Eric Schmitt, a U.S. Senator from Missouri, questioning thousands of donations that appear to exceed federal limits. The inquiries focus on 13 non-Missouri donors who appear nearly 5,700 times in campaign reports, contributing a total of $85,672.
One woman from Texas is a primary focus of the investigation, appearing over 126,000 times in federal records since 2023, including 1,011 entries in Schmitt's reports. Other Missouri Republicans, including Senator Josh Hawley and Representatives Jason Smith and Ann Wagner, also received contributions from these prolific donors. Representative Eric Burlison reported that his campaign blocked the Texas woman in July after receiving a similar FEC inquiry, comparing the volume of small daily donations to being spammed.
Campaign treasurer Janna Rutland attributed the discrepancies to a software error that mismatched donor information and stated that amended reports were filed to address the issues. The situation has raised concerns regarding dark patterns in online fundraising platforms like WinRed, which can facilitate automated recurring contributions that bypass or exceed legal limits.
