California Officials Set Voter Registration Deadline for Oct. 19

California officials set the midterm election registration deadline for Oct. 19 and urged voters to mail ballots by Oct. 27 to avoid delivery delays.

The deadline for eligible voters to register for the California midterm general election is Monday, Oct. 19. U.S. citizens and California residents who are at least 18 years old by Election Day on Nov. 3 can register through online portals, county elections offices, DMV field offices, or other government buildings.

Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Attorney General Rob Bonta have urged voters to mail their ballots by Oct. 27 to ensure they are received on time. This recommendation follows the rejection of 148,241 mail ballots during the June primary, with nearly two-thirds of those rejections resulting from missed deadlines.

Rob Bonta warned that changes in U.S. Postal Service delivery timelines increase the risk of ballots arriving too late if they are mailed on Election Day. Voters who miss the Oct. 19 registration deadline may still utilize conditional voter registration to cast a ballot at polling places or vote centers, though these ballots are only counted after the state verifies the registration.
