Governor Josh Shapiro Sues Trump Administration Over SNAP Data

Josh Shapiro, the Governor of Pennsylvania, filed a lawsuit on August 3, 2026, against the Trump Administration to block the federal government from accessing personal information of state residents receiving temporary assistance benefits. The suit specifically targets attempts to obtain data from individuals enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Shapiro argues that the federal government's efforts to acquire this data constitute an unlawful seizure and represent an attempt to control state-level policies. This legal challenge is the latest in a series of conflicts between the governor and the administration, marking more than two dozen lawsuits filed by Shapiro over the last 18 months.

Previous legal actions by the governor have focused on federal funding and environmental protections. Shapiro has also sued the administration for withholding homeland security funds, claiming those actions were intended to undermine community safety and influence elections within Pennsylvania.
