YouGov Poll Shows Europeans Support Climate Action but Oppose Costs
YouGov found that most Europeans acknowledge human-made climate change and favor international cooperation, though they oppose policies that increase personal living costs.
A poll conducted by YouGov across Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom shows a broad consensus that human-made climate change is real and requires urgent action. Between 69% of respondents in Germany and 80% in France acknowledge the reality of climate change, while overall worry levels range from 65% to 83% across the surveyed nations.
Public concern peaked during summer heatwaves, with France recording a record 42% of respondents reporting they were very worried in August. While the majority of Europeans prefer international cooperation and decision-making at the European Union level over individual national policies, their support for specific measures depends on personal financial impact.
Respondents favor non-intrusive actions, such as taxing large emitters and planting trees. However, they oppose policies that directly affect their lifestyles, including bans on new petrol and diesel cars, limits on meat and dairy consumption, and increases in fuel duties.
