Axel Springer Considers Cutting 100 Telegraph Journalists
Axel Springer is considering redundancies for 50 to 100 journalists at the Telegraph Media Group despite previous pledges to invest in the titles.
Axel Springer is considering redundancies for 50 to 100 journalists at the Telegraph Media Group, which the German media company purchased for £575 million earlier this year. The proposed cuts may be announced before Christmas, following recommendations from consultants to reduce newsroom staff and diversify revenue through price comparison sites and healthcare projects.
These potential layoffs contrast with previous assertions from CEO Mathias Döpfner that the company cannot "cut its way to growth." Döpfner had previously pledged to invest in the titles to establish them as the leading centre-right media outlet in the English-speaking world and expressed a desire to expand operations in the United States.
The Telegraph Media Group recently reported a £4 million loss attributed to asset revaluation and legal fees, although it maintained an underlying pre-tax operating profit of approximately £48 million.
