JNU Dismisses Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam Over Harassment
Jawaharlal Nehru University dismissed Professor and Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following an internal inquiry into sexual harassment allegations made by 11 female students.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) dismissed Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a professor and Congress Lok Sabha MP for Inner Manipur, on October 9, 2026. The decision followed an Internal Committee inquiry into sexual harassment allegations filed by 11 female students in May 2026. The committee found Akoijam guilty of making sexually suggestive remarks in class, unwelcome physical contact during vivas, and inviting students to his residence for harassment, concluding he created a hostile learning environment.
Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit signed the dismissal order, which imposed the punishment after the committee recommended major disciplinary action. The case gained momentum after the Delhi Commission for Women took suo motu cognisance of the matter in September 2026 following the circulation of a video on social media. Akoijam has denied the allegations, describing the proceedings as a "witch hunt" and calling them "unverified, intentional, unethical and illegal."
The dismissal triggered immediate political backlash. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Home Minister Govindas Konthouham demanded Akoijam's immediate resignation from the Lok Sabha, stating he has lost the moral authority to serve as a public representative. Simultaneously, the BJP Mahila Morcha launched a nationwide campaign, including a massive protest outside the Congress office in Lucknow on October 10, to demand accountability from the Congress leadership.
