Reserve Bank of India Approves LIC Stake Increase in HDFC Bank
The Reserve Bank of India authorized Life Insurance Corporation of India to increase its holding in HDFC Bank to 9.99 percent.
The Reserve Bank of India approved an application by the Life Insurance Corporation of India to increase its aggregate holding in HDFC Bank to 9.99 percent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights. The regulatory clearance, issued in a letter dated August 19, 2026, provides the legal scope for the state-owned insurer to expand its position without mandating an immediate purchase.
As of August 14, 2026, the Life Insurance Corporation held a 4.11 percent stake in the private sector lender, meaning the approval allows for a potential increase of 5.88 percent. The authorization is subject to several conditions, including strict compliance with the Banking Regulation Act of 1949, the Foreign Exchange Management Act of 1999, and regulations established by the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
Shares of both the Life Insurance Corporation and HDFC Bank traded higher on the BSE following the disclosure of the regulatory approval.
