India Expands Energy Sourcing to 41 Countries for Resilience
Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced India has diversified crude sourcing and expanded refining capacity to shield domestic consumers from global energy supply shortages.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday that India has protected domestic consumers from global energy supply shortages by prioritizing long-term resilience and diversification. Speaking at the India Energy Week 2027 curtain raiser in Kolkata and to the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Puri detailed how India expanded its crude oil sourcing from 27 to 41 countries over the last decade.
To support this diversification, the government increased refining capacity from 215 to 267 MMTPA and expanded LPG import terminals from 11 to 22. Puri credited these infrastructure gains and the creation of 5.33 MT of strategic reserves for maintaining steady imports during geopolitical crises.
Regional developments in West Bengal are also accelerating, with ₹17,600 crore in ongoing oil and gas projects. This includes the commercial production of the Ashoknagar oil discovery, which saw its first crude consignment delivered to Haldia in August 2026. India Energy Week 2027 is scheduled to take place in Kolkata from January 28 to 31, 2027.
