Winston Peters Condemns Michael Laws Over Sexist Remarks

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters condemned candidate Michael Laws for sexist comments targeting female members of the Opportunity Party.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters condemned sexist remarks made by party candidate Michael Laws, who mocked female members of the Opportunity Party on his online radio show. Peters described the comments as "disgusting" and "unacceptable," though he also characterized the incident as a "silly mistake."

Laws issued an apology, stating his commentary was intended to be "mischievously humorous." However, Opportunity Party leader Qiulae Wong rejected the apology and described the language as "awful" and "misogynistic."

Because the party list is finalized and the election is imminent, Peters stated he cannot remove Laws immediately. He promised there will be consequences after the election and noted that the party board will meet to discuss the matter. National leader Christopher Luxon has already ruled out Laws for any ministerial portfolios should a right-wing bloc win the election.

The controversy has highlighted a history of condemned remarks by Laws regarding abortion, domestic violence, and women's appearances. Laws has defended these previous statements as jokes or claims that they were taken out of context.
