OpenAI Merges ChatGPT Interfaces and Updates Usage Limits

OpenAI is integrating Chat and Work interfaces into a single experience and implementing shared token allowances for paid subscription plans.

OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs within ChatGPT into a single interface to allow users to transition from exploring ideas to executing complex tasks, such as building websites or creating presentations, in one place. The company is testing this combined experience with a small group of users before a wider rollout. As part of this transition, OpenAI will retire the ChatGPT Classic app for Mac on January 30, 2027, moving users to a newer desktop application that integrates ChatGPT, Work, and Codex.

While the new desktop app has faced criticism for shifting from a native macOS architecture to an Electron-based framework, the company has introduced design updates including a navigation sidebar and improved toggles. The Codex experience in the desktop app will remain separate from the hybrid Chat and Work mode.

Starting in December, OpenAI will implement a shared usage allowance measured in tokens for Plus, Pro, and Business plans across both ChatGPT and Codex. Users can monitor combined usage and reset times in the settings menu, though the Unlimited Instant feature will remain exempt from these limits. Previously, on October 29, the company doubled the Work and Codex allowances for Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 subscriptions.
