United Airlines Deploys Starlink to Lure Competitor Loyalty Members

United Airlines is equipping nearly 1,000 aircraft with Starlink internet and offering status matches to attract frequent flyers from Delta and American Airlines.

United Airlines is rolling out Starlink satellite internet across its fleet to gain a competitive edge in in-flight connectivity. The company expects nearly 1,000 aircraft to be equipped by the end of 2026, with a goal of fleet-wide installation by the end of 2027. Currently, between 635 and 639 aircraft—roughly 43% of the fleet—possess the service, including all regional United Express jets.

On October 15, 2026, the airline launched the Starlink WiFi Tracker, enabling passengers to verify high-speed internet availability on their flights up to three days before departure. The tool tracks availability across seven hubs, with Chicago showing the highest availability at 54% and San Francisco the lowest at 36%.

To capitalize on this technology, United extended its "Switch to Better Wi-Fi" status-match offer through October 22. The campaign allows eligible loyalty members from Delta Air Lines and American Airlines to earn United Premier status through January 2028. United reports a 275% increase in status match applications since the campaign began, noting that the high-speed service attracts travelers performing intensive tasks like video editing.

Competitors currently lag in deployment. American Airlines plans to begin Starlink installations in early 2027, while Delta Air Lines has partnered with Amazon Leo for connectivity not expected until 2028.
