Republicans Hold Florida Top Offices With Narrow Margins
Republicans maintained control of Florida's top offices in the 2026 midterms, though Democrats made significant gains in the state legislature and among Hispanic voters.
Republicans retained control of Florida's highest offices in the 2026 midterm elections, though they did so with significantly narrower margins than in previous cycles. Byron Donalds won the governor's race by just over one percentage point, while Ashley Moody secured the Senate seat by three percentage points.
Democrats achieved substantial gains in the state legislature, flipping a state Senate seat and picking up at least 15 seats in the state House, which broke the Republican supermajority. The shift was most pronounced in Miami-Dade County, where Hispanic and Cuban-American voters moved toward Democrats due to concerns over inflation, the economy, and immigration raids conducted by the Trump administration.
Democratic leaders view the results as evidence that Florida is becoming more competitive ahead of the 2028 presidential election. Party Chair Nikki Fried has urged donors to increase funding for year-round organizing to build on these gains. Republican U.S. Representative María Elvira Salazar noted the results as a moment of reckoning, having previously warned Donald Trump that his immigration crackdown had gone too far.
