Saudi Arabia Sentences Dozens of Ethiopian Migrants to Death

Saudi Arabia is facing international criticism for sentencing dozens of Ethiopian migrants to death over drug offenses, while Ethiopia pursues diplomatic channels for their protection.

Dozens of Ethiopian migrants are facing execution in Saudi Arabia for non-violent drug offenses, with approximately 60 individuals currently held on death row at the Khamis Mushait prison. Reports indicate that at least 10 Ethiopians have already been executed this year. Many of the detainees allege they were coerced by smugglers into transporting banned substances, such as khat or hashish, to repay travel debts, often without knowing the contents of their packages.

Human rights organizations and legal experts describe a systemic failure of due process, citing torture-induced confessions, a lack of legal representation, and the absence of interpreters during hearings. These advocates claim Saudi authorities specifically target vulnerable migrants who have crossed borders in search of better lives. The Government of Saudi Arabia maintains that these executions follow final Supreme Court rulings and are necessary to protect the security of citizens and residents from the scourge of drugs through the harshest legal penalties.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has stated it is maintaining regular communication and constructive engagement with Saudi authorities to seek humanitarian consideration and consular support. While Ethiopian officials noted that 1,971 of their nationals recently benefited from royal amnesties, the ministry has not publicly challenged the Saudi government's use of the death penalty in these specific cases.
