Malawi Parliament Mocks Minister Alfred Gangata Over English Skills
Members of Parliament mocked Sports and Culture Minister Alfred Gangata after he struggled to deliver a formal statement in English during a legislative session.
The Parliament of Malawi descended into mockery on Monday during a formal session when Alfred Gangata, the Minister of Sports and Culture, struggled to deliver a prepared statement in English. Members of parliament erupted in laughter, cheers, and applause as Gangata stumbled through his notes and struggled with basic phrasing.
Speaker Sameer Suleman intervened by summoning the sergeant-at-arms to move Gangata's documents to the dispatch box to assist the minister. Despite the intervention, Gangata eventually stated he would refer the matter to the Legal Affairs Committee, an announcement that triggered further laughter from the chamber.
Gangata, a businessman-turned-politician, has faced ongoing public ridicule regarding his grammar and speech delivery. Prior to this session, he had been mocked for phrases such as "My people, my football."
