New Patriotic Party Protests Democratic Threats in Accra

The New Patriotic Party organized a large-scale street protest in Accra on August 6, 2026, under the theme Democracy under attack. Participants converged at a community center and marched through the Efua Sunderland area and the Ako Adjei Interchange to the city's central business district. The demonstration aimed to address perceived threats to Ghana's democratic institutions, including executive overreach, the erosion of checks and balances, and the politicization of the judiciary.

As part of the action, the party presented three separate petitions to the Supreme Court, Parliament, and the Presidency at Jubilee House. Protesters wore black and red to symbolize mourning for the state of the nation's democracy. To maximize turnout, the party's National Steering Committee ordered all aspirants campaigning in the Greater Accra Region to suspend activities on August 5 and 6 to mobilize supporters.

The party cited grievances including electoral malpractices, voter suppression, and the harassment of journalists. While the Ghana Police Service coordinated security arrangements, authorities later intensified measures by deploying riot police and intelligence units to prevent unrest. The party also challenged reports that the government imposed media restrictions during the event.
