Democratic Alliance Claims 58 Percent Victory in Cape Town
Geordin Hill-Lewis declared the Democratic Alliance the winner in Cape Town with a projected 58 percent of the vote.
Mayor and Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis declared the party the winner in the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. Based on internal data from 24 percent of voting stations, Hill-Lewis projected the party would secure approximately 58 percent of the vote, which he described as a resounding endorsement to govern the city.
Hill-Lewis reported significant growth in Cape Town's townships, claiming the party tripled or quadrupled its support in areas where it previously received only 2 to 4 percent of the vote. While the party claims a comfortable majority in Cape Town, Hill-Lewis suggested that other South African cities would likely be governed by coalitions, potentially led by the Democratic Alliance.
Nationally, the electoral landscape differs from the local result in Cape Town. Preliminary results from 31 percent of voting stations showed the African National Congress leading the Democratic Alliance with 32 percent compared to 27 percent.
