FSSAI Bans PIE Foods Monk Fruit Sweetener Sales

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a prohibition order on August 7, 2026, directing PIE Foods to immediately halt the sale of its Monk Fruit Extract Sweetener and Monk Fruit Sweetener Drops. The regulator cited multiple licensing failures, including the absence of a valid relabeller endorsement and the operation of an e-commerce site without the necessary business endorsement in the company's license.

FSSAI investigators found that product labels lacked mandatory declarations and featured unauthorized claims, such as "100 per cent Monk Fruit Extract" and "Natural Ingredients." The regulator also noted that the company's website used a "Doctor Recommended" claim, which violates regulations established in 2018 and 2020.

To resume sales, PIE Foods must obtain a valid FSSAI Central Licence. Because monk fruit extract is classified as a non-specified food ingredient, the company must also secure specific regulatory approval for the ingredient before it can return to the market.
