Reserve Bank of New Zealand Weighs Rate Hike Amid Inflation

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand may raise interest rates on October 28 as oil prices and a weak currency threaten to drive inflation higher.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is preparing for a monetary policy decision on October 28, with financial analysts expecting a 25-basis-point increase that would bring the Official Cash Rate to 3%. This potential hike comes as the bank monitors a complex inflation environment where short-term easing may be offset by long-term pressures.

Economists from ANZ, Westpac, and a Bloomberg survey project that annual inflation for the September quarter will slow to between 3.7% and 3.8%, down from 4.1% in June. However, this respite is expected to be temporary. Surging oil prices linked to Middle East conflicts and a weakening New Zealand dollar are projected to drive inflation back up in the final three months of 2026.

The final decision hinges on consumer price index data scheduled for release on October 22. While the central bank targets a medium-term inflation range of 1% to 3%, the projected year-end surge strengthens the case for further tightening to maintain price stability.
