Apple Plans to Merge iPhone Action Button by 2027

Apple may remove the dedicated Action button in 2027, merging its customizable functions into the Camera Control button for the iPhone's 20th anniversary.

Apple is reportedly planning to remove the dedicated Action button from iPhone Pro models arriving in the second half of 2027. According to leaks from Weibo user Instant Digital, the company intends to merge the Action button's customizable shortcut functions into the Camera Control button.

Under the rumored configuration, a single press of the Camera Control button would open the camera, while a long press would trigger the user-assigned Action button function. This change would replace the current long-press behavior of the Camera Control button, which currently opens Visual Intelligence. The redesign would eliminate the physical button located above the volume controls.

These hardware changes coincide with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. Other reports suggest the milestone may bring a significant chassis redesign featuring glass on the front and back that curves into the sides around a thin metal band, or curved cover glass over a flat display. Additional rumors point to the introduction of solid-state controls and a potential naming jump to the iPhone 20. Apple has not confirmed these leaks or provided technical details regarding the 2027 hardware.
