G20 Foreign Ministers Meet in Atlanta Over AI and Minerals

G20 foreign ministers are meeting in Atlanta to discuss AI and critical minerals amid deep divisions over wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Foreign ministers from the G20 are meeting in Atlanta from October 30 to 31 to address energy, supply chain challenges, and the development of artificial intelligence. The Federal government of the United States, currently holding the rotating presidency, is using the gathering to promote the Pax Silica initiative. This strategy aims to counter the dominance of China in rare earths and critical minerals.

Diplomatic tensions characterize the summit, exacerbated by the attendance of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the exclusion of South Africa. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called for increased support for Ukraine and stated that "Russia must be accountable."

Strategic competition between the United States and China, alongside conflicting positions on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, threaten the group's ability to issue unified statements. The ministerial meeting precedes a G20 leaders' summit scheduled for December 14 to 16 in Miami. Additionally, technical-level trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are expected to take place in Abu Dhabi next month.
