Google Launches Premium Googlebook Laptops with Android-Based OS

Google launched Googlebook on September 21, 2026, introducing a new category of high-end laptops designed to compete with Windows and macOS. The devices run Googlebook OS, a hybrid operating system that merges the app ecosystem of Android with the multitasking and security architecture of ChromeOS. This strategic shift targets professional consumers, though Google stated it will continue supporting traditional Chromebooks until 2034.

The platform emphasizes deep integration with Android smartphones through features like "Continue On" for task handoff, "Cast My Apps" for streaming phone applications to the desktop, and deep file system integration. The hardware is powered by either Intel Core Ultra or Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors, with minimum specifications including 16GB of RAM and aluminum-magnesium alloy chassis. AI capabilities are central to the experience, featuring Gemini-driven tools such as "Magic Pointer" for contextual cursor prompts and "Rambler" for advanced voice dictation.

Five initial models from partners Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are available for preorder, with retail availability starting October 4 in the United States and October 5 in several international markets including Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Prices in the U.S. range from $899 for the Acer Googlebook 14 to $1,299 for high-end models from HP, Lenovo, and Asus, while the Dell XPS Googlebook is priced at $1,199.
