UK Government and Ofgem Launch Energy Debt Relief Scheme
The Government of the United Kingdom and Ofgem will write off energy arrears for up to 2.4 million vulnerable households starting in spring 2027.
The Government of the United Kingdom and the energy regulator Ofgem announced a Debt Relief Scheme to write off energy arrears for millions of households in genuine financial need. The program targets debts accumulated during the energy crisis between 2022 and 2024, with up to 2.4 million customers potentially eligible for support.
Eligibility is limited to a single phase covering pensioners, individuals on disability benefits, and those on means-tested benefits. To qualify for relief, customers must engage with their energy suppliers to establish repayment plans and prevent the accumulation of future debt. The scheme is scheduled to launch in spring 2027 as part of broader reforms that include reviews of involuntary prepayment meters and changes to the home-moving process.
Government analysis suggests the strategy could save typical households 130 pounds over a decade and prevent 5 billion pounds in new debt by 2036. Energy UK welcomed the initiative but warned that total energy debt could reach 8 billion pounds by early 2028 if the program is not implemented rapidly and collaboratively with industry suppliers.
