Obama Campaigns for Ohio Democrats Amid Ramaswamy Ad Controversy
Barack Obama rallied for Democratic candidates in Cleveland as Republican Vivek Ramaswamy faced bipartisan backlash for an attack ad featuring Amy Acton's mother.
Former President Barack Obama joined Democratic candidates Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton for the Fighting for Ohio rally in Cleveland on Saturday. The event sought to mobilize support for the November 3 midterm elections, with Brown attempting to reclaim a U.S. Senate seat and Acton running for governor. During the rally, Obama criticized Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, stating there is "no line he will not cross."
The campaign has been overshadowed by a controversial advertisement produced by Ramaswamy featuring Acton's estranged mother, Donna Arthur, who calls Acton a liar. Acton has responded by alleging that Arthur supported a man who sexually abused Acton and her brother as children, citing a grand jury indictment as evidence. While Ramaswamy maintains the ad focuses on lying rather than childhood abuse, the tactic drew condemnation from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who called it "deeply, deeply troubling."
President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance defended the advertisement, with Trump questioning why a mother should not be allowed to criticize her daughter. The controversy prompted The Cleveland Plain Dealer to reverse a previous decision and endorse Acton. At the rally, Acton characterized Ramaswamy as a "danger" to the state, while Brown claimed that "corruption is woven into everything."
