Gaza Death Toll Hits 73,449 as Recovery Efforts Continue

The Gaza Strip Health Ministry reported on August 29, 2026, that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has reached 73,449, with 174,472 injured since October 2023. The ministry noted that nine Palestinians were killed and 18 injured in the 48 hours preceding the report. Despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States that took effect on October 10, 2025, the ministry reports continued Israeli violations resulting in 1,313 deaths and 4,361 injuries.

Simultaneously, Palestinian civil defense teams recovered 233 bodies, including 73 children and 106 women, from the rubble of more than a dozen homes destroyed by Israeli forces. Authorities estimate 407 bodies are buried beneath these specific homes, leaving 174 people still missing. These operations are part of a second recovery phase that began on July 19, though efforts are hindered by a critical lack of equipment.

Broader estimates on the missing vary. The Gaza Government Media Office previously reported roughly 9,500 missing since October 7, 2023, while the Palestinian Center for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons estimates between 2,500 and 3,000 people have been subjected to enforced disappearance and another 4,000 to 5,000 remain under rubble. In the West Bank, Israeli airstrikes in Jenin killed three Palestinians, including an alleged Hamas operative. The United Nations estimates the cost to reconstruct Gaza's civilian infrastructure, 90% of which is destroyed, at $70 billion.
