Governor Maura Healey Extends MBTA Discounts and Launches Fare Pilots

Governor Maura Healey announced a series of transit affordability initiatives on July 28, 2026, including three new pilot programs and the extension of two summer discounts. The governor extended the 50 percent discount on monthly commuter rail passes and the $1 weekend companion fare through November. While these discounts remain, the Free Fridays commuter rail promotion is scheduled to end after August.

Beginning September 1, the MBTA will launch a two-hour unlimited transfer window between the subway, bus, and ferry systems. The agency will also reduce express bus fares from $4.25 to the standard local fare of $1.70 on seven routes. A separate program, developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, will provide free fares to non-driving residents aged 75 and older, with eligibility and start dates expected later this fall.

Healey described these measures as part of her affordability agenda, noting that some riders could save upwards of $600 over the coming months. MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng detailed the operational aspects of the pilots, expressing hope that the expanded flexibility would encourage more residents to use the transit network.
