Asia Gains Structural Advantages in Global AI Development

Magnus Grimeland argues Asia's power production and chip access provide a unique advantage for building the world's leading AI companies.

Venture capital leader Magnus Grimeland stated at the Fortune Southeast Asia 500 Summit in Vietnam that Asia now possesses structural advantages over the United States and Europe for building leading AI companies. He cited superior power production, an abundance of advanced chips, and leadership in physical AI, particularly autonomous vehicles, as primary drivers for this shift.

Financial data shows a significant but uneven distribution of investment across the region. Venture funding in Asia reached a three-year quarterly high of $42.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026. However, China remains the dominant force, receiving $96.1 billion of the $141 billion in total annual VC funds, which primarily benefited startups such as DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and StepFun. In comparison, Southeast Asia received $10.7 billion.

Regional challenges persist in emerging markets. Franco Varona noted that the Philippines currently lacks the basic infrastructure required for the development of AI applications and large language models. To address regional business structures, Granite Asia is implementing hybrid debt-equity funding models to better accommodate the prevalence of family-owned conglomerates in Asia.
