India Signs ₹810.79 Crore Deal for 160 Smart Bombs

The Ministry of Defence of India signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited on September 23, 2026, to procure 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) for the Indian Air Force. The agreement, signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb with 60% indigenous content, including the Long Impact Delay Fuse and Initial Measurement Unit. The weapon utilizes INS-GPS guidance to neutralize enemy runways, hangars, and radar installations from stand-off ranges up to 100 km. This capability allows aircraft to strike critical infrastructure while avoiding hostile airspace.

The weapons will be integrated into Jaguar, Hawk, and Su-30 MKI aircraft, with future integration planned for Rafale and Tejas Mk1A fleets. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2027 and 2029. This procurement aims to increase national self-reliance in defence production and reduce dependence on imported munitions such as the French HAMMER and Israeli SPICE. Reports indicate the weapon system was previously utilized in combat during Operation Sindoor against Pakistani air bases.
