DAP Withdraws from Melaka Government Over Nominated Assemblymen Bill

The Democratic Action Party withdrew from Melaka's state administration after the assembly passed a bill allowing the appointment of up to seven unelected assemblymen.

The Melaka State Assembly passed the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 on July 14, 2026, with 23 votes in favor and five opposed. The legislation allows for the appointment of up to seven nominated assemblymen to bring experts in law, economics, and technology, as well as underrepresented groups, into the legislature.

Ab Rauf Yusoh, the Chief Minister of Melaka, defended the amendment as a means to enhance representation for women, youth, and minority communities. He denied that the bill creates a back door to political power and clarified that no appointments would be made before the current term ends in December 2026.

The passage of the bill triggered the immediate withdrawal of the Democratic Action Party from the state administration. State DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong argued that the amendment contradicts democratic principles, asserting that assemblymen must be elected by the people. Resigning officials include Executive Councillor Allex Seah, Deputy Speaker Kerk Chee Yee, and Deputy Executive Councillors Low Chee Leong and Leng Chau Yen.

Chief Minister Yusoh stated he would not stop the party's decision to leave, noting that the party's presence was intended to reflect a spirit of cooperation rather than a formal coalition agreement. Opposition leader Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub expressed support for the bill, provided it is implemented through a transparent mechanism.
