United Nations Recognizes Growing Global Influence of BRICS

The United Nations has recognized the expanding global significance of the BRICS group, noting its capacity to amplify the voices of developing countries. Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary-General António Guterres, advocated for comprehensive reforms within international financial institutions to protect the interests of the Global South and establish a more equitable global trading system.

Dujarric stated that the group's influence is vital for addressing global threats such as terrorism and financial inequalities, given that BRICS represents a significant portion of the world's population and GDP. The grouping has expanded to 11 members, with Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa increasing African influence within the bloc.

This expansion provides African states with alternatives to Western-led financial systems through the New Development Bank and the Belt and Road Initiative. Investments in Africa via the latter reached 39 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of 2025. Following the leadership of the Government of India, the Government of China is set to assume the BRICS presidency.
