Australian Committee Probes Social Media Role in Radicalization

An Australian parliamentary committee is investigating how social media platforms drive political extremism following a severe attack on Member of Parliament Helen Haines.

An Australian parliamentary committee is investigating the role of social media in driving radicalization and political extremism after a severe attack on Member of Parliament Helen Haines. The inquiry, led by Senator Raff Ciccone, will gather testimony from intelligence agencies, the eSafety Commissioner, and the Home Affairs Department.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation submitted evidence stating that mainstream social media platforms accelerate radicalization by amplifying grievance narratives and trapping users in algorithmic echo chambers. Labor Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh argued that government intervention is necessary, stating that individual efforts to log off are often unsuccessful and that randomized experiments show social media can diminish wellbeing and fuel polarization.

While the government has already banned social media for users under 16, a proposed bill to introduce a digital duty of care and allow users to opt out of algorithms remains stalled. The Coalition has criticized the proposed legislation as political censorship, whereas the Greens are calling for stricter penalties for social media companies.
