JNIM and Azawad Liberation Front Ally Against Malian Military

Mali is facing its most severe security crisis in years following a tactical partnership between the al-Qaida-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). This alliance has intensified coordinated attacks against the Malian military and its Russian paramilitary partner, the Africa Corps. Fatalities from militant attacks increased 35% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the previous year.

The partnership led to massive simultaneous attacks across the country in April 2026 and a recent ambush of a military convoy that resulted in dozens of soldiers being killed or captured. While the FLA seeks independence for northern Mali, JNIM aims to expand its authority and remove foreign influence from the region. Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, a spokesperson for the FLA, described the alliance as tactical coordination.

The conflict occurs under a military junta that took power in 2020, subsequently exited a 2015 peace accord and expelled French forces in 2022. Meanwhile, the Islamic State Sahel Province continues to compete with JNIM for territory as both groups seek to defeat the state's security apparatus.
