Economist Amanda Janoo Wins Vermont Democratic Gubernatorial Primary

Economist Amanda Janoo won the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Vermont on August 12, 2026, defeating former Let's Grow Kids CEO Aly Richards. Janoo, a first-time candidate and former United Nations employee, secured the nomination with approximately 49% of the vote to Richards' 46%.

Janoo ran on a progressive, anti-establishment platform. Her proposals include taxes on second homes and short-term rentals, as well as publicly funded universal primary care supported by surcharges on high earners. This platform prevailed despite Richards outraising Janoo and receiving backing from established political figures and a super PAC.

Following the results, Richards conceded the race and pledged her support to Janoo to ensure the defeat of the five-term Republican incumbent, Governor Phil Scott. Janoo will now face Scott in the November general election. Paul Dame, Chair of the Vermont GOP, claimed that Janoo's progressive promises would serve as a liability during the general election campaign.
