Texas Grid Faces Supply Shortfall as Demand Surges

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas territory recorded a new unofficial all-time peak demand on July 22, with forecasts indicating that demand could reach 120 GW by 2030. A report from Ascend Analytics warns that the state faces a significant supply shortfall because the capacity to add new generation is far smaller than the demand from queued large-load facilities, including cryptocurrency operations, data centers, and industrial oil and gas development.

Ascend Analytics identifies several primary constraints preventing the financing and construction of dispatchable generation, including gas turbine shortages, interconnection bottlenecks, and a lack of revenue certainty within the energy-only market. While reserve margins are expected to remain healthy through 2026, the firm predicts supply will tighten after that period.

These constraints have prompted discussions regarding market reforms. One proposed solution involves requiring large-load users to provide their own new generation to ensure that demand growth aligns with available supply.
