NuScale Power Fabricates Critical SMR Cooling Components

NuScale Power successfully fabricated specialized boron-oxide pellets on September 1 in collaboration with MilleniTEK. These pellets are essential components of the passive emergency cooling system for the company's 77 MWe Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design, enabling automatic reactivity control without the need for operator intervention.

By manufacturing these critical components before the start of construction, the company intends to avoid the site-level bottlenecks and cost overruns that caused the 2023 termination of its Carbon Free Power Project with Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems. NuScale Power remains the only SMR developer to hold Standard Design Approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The company is now shifting toward commercial deployment. This includes the RoPower Doicești Project in Romania, where NuScale Power plans to bring the first of up to six power modules online by 2033.
