Myanmar Government Delivers King Charles III Package to Suu Kyi
The military-backed government of Myanmar delivered books and diplomatic correspondence from King Charles III to detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The military-backed government of Myanmar delivered two books and a sealed diplomatic communication from King Charles III to detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday. The delivery, which took place in Naypyitaw, included the titles "The Land Gardeners: Soil to Table" and "Soil: The World at Our Feet," reflecting the British monarch's advocacy for sustainable agriculture.
Two officials from the Home Affairs ministry conducted the 10-minute meeting at an undisclosed location where Suu Kyi is currently under house arrest. The Presidential Press and Information Bureau released two photographs of the encounter, the first images of the 81-year-old Nobel laureate in two months. In a Facebook statement, a presidential spokeswoman referred to Suu Kyi as a "special female detainee," marking the first time the government has used this specific terminology.
Suu Kyi has been detained since the February 2021 military coup and is serving an 18-year sentence for corruption and election fraud, charges she denies. President Min Aung Hlaing, who seized power in the coup and was installed as president following a 2025 election, is using the gesture to project a return to normalcy and reduce international isolation. The British Foreign Office has not yet confirmed if diplomats attempted to deliver the package in person.
