UAE Grants Starlink 10-Year Satellite Internet License

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) granted Starlink Satellite Communications LLC a 10-year General Space Services License on August 28, 2026. This authorization allows the company, owned by Elon Musk, to establish and manage a public satellite communications network providing broadband internet services throughout the United Arab Emirates.

The network will serve individual consumers, businesses, and government entities, with a specific focus on the aviation, maritime, energy, and logistics sectors. By adding a space-based layer to existing 5G and fiber-optic infrastructure, the initiative aims to enhance network resilience and emergency response capabilities. The TDRA stated the move aligns with the UAE Digital Agenda and the "We the UAE 2031" vision to promote competition and position the country as a global hub for the digital economy.

Starlink must operate within national regulatory frameworks governing spectrum-use regulations, security, and data privacy. Director General Majed Sultan Al Mesmar characterized the license as a significant addition to the telecommunications sector that reflects the country's commitment to fostering a flexible regulatory environment for innovation and investment.
