Crowley and Tiffany Clash in Sole Wisconsin Gubernatorial Debate

Democratic candidate David Crowley and Republican Tom Tiffany debated tax policy, abortion, and election integrity ahead of the November 3 gubernatorial election.

Democratic Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and Republican U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany faced off Wednesday, October 21, in their only televised gubernatorial debate at Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee. The candidates clashed over the allocation of Wisconsin's nearly $3 billion budget surplus, with Tiffany proposing long-term tax relief—including a 10% income tax cut for those earning $150,000 or less—while Crowley advocated for funding public schools and providing property tax relief.

Policy disputes extended to immigration and education. Tiffany supported requiring sheriffs to honor federal ICE detainers and defended the expansion of school vouchers. Crowley opposed local ICE contracts and the expansion of the voucher program. On abortion, Tiffany stated he would maintain the current 20-week ban but would not sign a fetal heartbeat bill, while Crowley proposed a state constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights.

The candidates sparred over the 2020 presidential election. Tiffany defended his support for efforts to overturn the results by citing concerns over private grants and absentee ballot procedures, though he pledged to certify the 2028 election results. Crowley argued these past actions demonstrated a lack of independence and questioned Tiffany's reliability.

The debate occurred as early in-person voting began, with over 55,000 ballots cast on the first day. While an earlier Marquette Law School poll showed Crowley leading 49% to 46%, more recent data indicates the race is a statistical tie heading into the November 3 election.
