IMF Warns US Growth Insufficient to Reduce Public Debt
Kristalina Georgieva stated that the United States must implement fiscal measures beyond economic growth to address public debt exceeding $40 trillion.
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, stated on Wednesday that the United States cannot rely solely on economic growth to reduce its public debt, which has surpassed $40 trillion.
Speaking at the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Georgieva argued that while growth is helpful, it will not deliver the necessary adjustments quickly enough to put US debt on a sustainable path. She indicated that additional fiscal measures are required to address the deficit.
Georgieva noted that United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recognizes that current deficits and overall debt levels are too high.
