Vandenberg Space Force Base Detains Invited Journalists at Gunpoint
Security personnel at Vandenberg Space Force Base detained invited reporters and military escorts at gunpoint after mistakenly identifying their convoy as gate crashers.
Security personnel at Vandenberg Space Force Base detained five journalists and two military members at gunpoint on August 17, 2026. The group, which included reporters from Noozhawk, KSBY, KEYT, and the Santa Maria Times, was traveling in a government minivan escorted by uniformed public affairs staff to a groundbreaking ceremony for a new missile operator training facility.
Following an alarm regarding gate runners, security forces deployed sirens and metal barricades to stop the convoy. Officers ordered the occupants from their vehicles with their hands up and pointed firearms at them. The two military escorts—a junior officer and an enlisted member—were handcuffed and removed in government vehicles, while the reporters were ordered to sit on a curb for over 30 minutes. The detention caused the media members to miss the event entirely.
Space Launch Delta 30 attributed the incident to a breakdown in communication, noting an increase in unauthorized entry attempts at the installation. The installation commander has since ordered a full review of base protocols and media coordination processes. Tom Bolton, editor-in-chief of Noozhawk, criticized the response as unnecessary and potentially dangerous given that firearms were drawn.
