India's Space Economy Targets $44 Billion by 2033
The Government of India is scaling its space economy through private investment and downstream applications, targeting a valuation of $44 billion over the next decade.
The Government of India is overseeing a rapid expansion of the national space economy, which has reached $9 billion and is projected to grow to between $40 billion and $45 billion by 2033. This growth is supported by the Indian Space Policy 2023 and liberalized foreign direct investment rules that allow up to 100% FDI for satellite and ground-segment components.
Private sector participation has surged, with registered space startups growing from one in 2014 to approximately 440 by August 2026. Private investment rose from $100.5 million in 2021–22 to $618.5 million by March 2026. To sustain this momentum, the government established a Rs 1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund and the IN-SPACe Seed Fund Scheme. Between July 2023 and June 2026, India completed 12 launch vehicle missions for domestic and international clients.
Industry leaders marking National Space Day on August 23, 2026, noted a strategic shift from building basic capabilities to scaling businesses. Experts emphasize that sustainable growth will now be driven by downstream applications, including Earth observation, geospatial intelligence, and satellite communications, rather than solely by launch vehicles. This transition relies on public-private partnerships involving the Indian Space Research Organisation to convert raw satellite data into exportable commercial insights.
