Costco Partners With SCAN Group to Launch Medicare Plans

Costco Wholesale and SCAN Group are launching co-branded Medicare Advantage and supplement plans to integrate insurance with Costco's retail healthcare services.

Costco Wholesale Corporation and the nonprofit insurer SCAN Group announced a strategic partnership on August 18 to launch co-branded Medicare insurance products for seniors. The initiative will begin as a pilot program, rolling out Medicare Advantage plans in two U.S. states and a Medicare supplement (Medigap) plan in a third. While the specific states and launch dates remain undisclosed pending regulatory approval, the target markets include approximately 5 million Medicare enrollees.

The partnership integrates insurance benefits with Costco's existing retail healthcare ecosystem, including its pharmacies, optical centers, and hearing services. While Costco provides the brand and retail network, SCAN Health Plan serves as the actual insurance provider and HMO. Executives noted that federal regulations prevent the bundling of Costco warehouse memberships into these insurance plans.

Costco CEO Ron Vachris described the move as an extension of the company's commitment to delivering value to its members. SCAN Group CEO Sachin H. Jain stated that the goal is to create a simple system for seniors to access benefits seamlessly, noting that older adults seek healthcare rooted in organizations they trust. This entry into the $500 billion Medicare Advantage market comes as other private insurance providers reduce benefits and curtail markets due to rising costs.
