Greek Patriot Battery Intercepts Drone Swarm in Saudi Arabia

A Patriot air defense battery operated by the Military of Greece intercepted a swarm of drones on August 27, 2026, in the Yanbu region of Saudi Arabia. Operating in coordination with Saudi air defense systems, the Greek unit known as ELDYS-A launched three missiles to protect critical energy infrastructure belonging to Aramco, specifically targeting refineries and industrial hubs in Yanbu and Jazan along the Red Sea coast.

Greece has maintained the battery in Saudi Arabia since 2021 to safeguard energy facilities. This engagement marks the third time the system has been used in combat since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. In response to rising tensions and threats against U.S. bases in Europe, the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence remains on heightened alert and has moved an additional Patriot battery to Crete.

The deployment occurs amid complex regional dynamics. While Greece provides defense capabilities to Saudi Arabia, the Saudi government recently strengthened military ties with Turkey and Pakistan, signing a joint defense agreement on August 7, 2026. Some critics argue that maintaining these critical defense systems abroad leaves the Aegean region vulnerable to provocations from Turkey.
