TUC Predicts Surge in Private Sector Union Agreements
Paul Nowak predicts thousands of new union recognition agreements following the implementation of the Employment Rights Act in the United Kingdom.
The Trades Union Congress expects a significant increase in union recognition agreements within the private sector following the implementation of the Employment Rights Act. Paul Nowak, general secretary of the TUC, predicts that hundreds or thousands of new agreements will be signed over the next year, describing the new legal framework as potentially transformative.
Starting October 30, 2026, the Act grants unions the right to enter workplaces or communicate with staff electronically. By January, employers must formally inform workers of their right to join a union. These measures aim to remove previous barriers that hampered union growth and are part of a broader government effort to upgrade workers' rights, including extended sick pay and restrictions on zero-hours contracts.
When unions and employers cannot reach a mutual agreement regarding workplace access, the Central Arbitration Committee will oversee the formal request process. Nowak stated that employers have nothing to fear from these changes as the union voice expands into the private sector.
